As early as 1910, the community of Windthorst saw the need of a combination curling and skating rink. The first arena was constructed in 1911 and served the community until it was destroyed by a cyclone in 1919.
In 1927 a new skating and two sheet curling rink was constructed. This facility still stands today a testament to the builders.
In 1964, the community looked into the possibility of building a larger skating rink. In 1965, a “Diener” type building was added to the north end of the 1927 facility.
Windthorst was now the proud owner of a regulation sized hockey and skating surface; a four sheet curling ice along with a 28 feet x 150 feet pre-school skating rink.
Unfortunately the design of the “Diener” rink resulted in structural problems and in 1991, the Community once again saw the construction of a new facility. By January 1994, the new arena was ready for use and for one winter the Village had the distinction of having their own “twin” arenas. The new facility officially opened in February 1995. The $375,000 facility was built entirely by funds raised by the community and opened debt-free.
The arena is home to recreational hockey teams and an active skating club and hosts a hockey tournament and skating carnival annually. The arena also sees many hours of public skaters, young and old, enjoying the facility!
